Officially the United Mexican States, it is situated in the southern portion of North America. Mexico is organised as a federal republic comprising 31 states and Mexico City, its capital. Other major urban areas include Monterrey, Guadalajara, Puebla, Toluca, Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, and León.

Mexico is known for its rich culture and biodiversity, as well as its varied climate and geography. Mexico ranks first in the Americas and seventh in the world for the number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries, ranking fifth in natural biodiversity.

The country however country continues to struggle with social inequality, poverty and extensive crime, due in large part to ongoing conflict between drug trafficking syndicates.
